Character Information
Name: Marianne von Edmund
Canon: Fire Emblem Three Houses
Canon Point: Pre-timeskip- The day after the ball
Age: 18
History: Right here!

Personality:

At first glance Marianne seems quiet, shy, and reserved. And that impression of her isn't wrong. She avoids talking to other people whenever possible, so much so that many of her classmates have never even heard her speak. She never seeks out social interaction, doesn't go out into town, and only contributes to class discussions if prompted. Almost all of her interactions with others are initiated by the other party and she is quick to try to end the conversation in any way she can. She's also quite pious, and can often be found in the cathedral, head bowed in silent prayer. Actually, her head is usually bowed anyway. Many people point out that Marianne has a bad habit of always looking down and almost never at other people or the world around her.

While sometimes her behavior is viewed as mysterious or standoffish, there is a reason for her gloomy and reclusive attitude. Because of her crest, she believes she is cursed, and that anyone who interacts with her is doomed to misfortune. Anything that goes wrong is clearly her fault. When Lysithea wanted her help with an accident in the training hall, Marianne ran off believing that she would only make things worse. And the accident was probably her fault anyway. Everything bad is her fault. Basically her self esteem is incredibly low. It is revealed in one of her post time skip conversations that Marianne prayed every day for the goddess to take for to her side. She's not quite suicidal, but she does believe that her existence serves no purpose and is nothing more than a burden to everyone around her. Her adoptive father is an ambitious man and hopes she might find an advantageous husband among the many nobles of the academy, but Marianne herself has simpler goals. To put it in her own words, "All I want is to live a quiet life and to not be a bother to anyone. I dare not hope for anything beyond that."

And speaking of her crest, she is terrified of people finding out that she was born with the crest of the Beast. She outright refuses Professor Hanneman's offer to help her learn to control her crest and pleads with Linhardt to keep the secret when he figures out which one she has. She was raised to fear what might happen if people find out and what the crest could do to her if she ever lost control. It is heavily implied that the 'disappearance' of her parents was the fault of the family crest. Her adoptive father, who is a distant relative and is well informed of the dangers of this particular crest, sent a sizeable 'donation' to the school with a note asking them to not confirm her crest.

But not everything in her life is doom and gloom. Marianne loves animals, and spends most of her free time in the stables with the horses, or chatting with the birds in the greenhouse. One of her dearest friends is a horse called Dorte. While she admits that she can't actually talk to animals, she can understand them well enough to communicate and can tell if an animal is hungry or tired or happy about something. It's earned her a reputation of being good at dealing with animals, both domestic and wild. Animals do seem to like her a lot, and birds will often flock to her side. They are also far more likely to see one of her very rare smiles. And perhaps it's because she's usually so negative, but it's actually very small and simple things that tend to cheer her up. Ignatz showing her a sunset, Raphael trying to talk her in birdie, and Lorenz telling her she's beautiful just as she is are all more than enough to bring her some rare moment of joy.

Abilities & Skills:

Marianne's talents lie mostly in magic, with specialties in ice and healing. She can use both a sword and lance, but her lack of strength makes her an ineffective fighter.

She was also born with the crest of the erased hero, Maurice, which will sometimes increase the might of the bearer when wielding a weapon. (Attack strength) This would be helpful in covering her lack of strength in a fight. If she wasn't terrified to use it. Not without reason though. Maurice himself lost control of the crest's power and became a demonic beast, killing countless innocent travelers over the years. It's heavily implied that this is a fate that could be met by anyone who has the misfortune of being born with this unstable crest. (It's pretty likely that's what happened to her birth father.)

Other than that, she's very good with animals. Not only can she understand them on some level, they tend to like her. Her personal skill reflects that, and restores her health on every turn she's next to a mounted unit.

Inventory/Companions: All Marianne is bringing with her is her school uniform and low self esteem. She can't have nice things.

Choice: Witch
Reason: Because she's spent her whole life in fear that she might become a rampaging beast at any time, just like her ancestor. Making her a monster is likely to just push her over the edge mentally and emotionally and she's already teetering. I think it's more interesting to confront her with other people facing a fate she's feared for so long. Does she try to help them? Can she help them? Does this change in her circumstances change who she is? It'll be interesting to find out either way.
